The Ginger Lilly (Hedychium gardnerianum), introduced from the Himalayas, is an attractive plant growing to a height of about 1.5 metres with a magnificent flower spike of sweetly scented blooms. However it has become so well adapted to the conditions on the Azores that it grows in great profusion and has smothered many native species.
