Kyrenia castle
|
Magnificent fortress overlooking Girne harbour with 1,000 years of fascinating history from the Crusaders, Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans and British to the present day. The sheer size of the brown sandstone walls and towers cannot fail to impress, strengthened and widened under Venetian rule when bow and arrow gave way to cannon. The castle is open to the public, and houses the Shipwreck Museum. It’s possible to walk a complete circuit of the ramparts with stunning views over the harbour and to the mountains.
